Lamborghini Driver's "NASA" Launch at Traffic Lights Ends in Seizure

Lamborghini Driver's "NASA" Launch at Traffic Lights Ends in Seizure

A driver's attempt to blast off from a Bradford junction like a rocket ship has cost him his luxury Lamborghini, after police caught him driving anti-socially and discovered he lacked proper insurance.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Bradford East neighbourhood policing team were in the area when they spotted the Lamborghini accelerating aggressively away from traffic lights on Shipley Airedale Road. According to police, the driver appeared completely unaware that officers were nearby as he attempted to "launch" the sports car "like a NASA craft."

When officers pulled the driver over to discuss the aggressive manoeuvre, the conversation soon turned to insurance. The driver insisted he was confident his own policy allowed him to drive the Lamborghini legally, believing he was covered under third-party rights on his existing cover.

However, when police checked the details, it emerged that his policy did not actually extend to cover him driving the high-value vehicle in that way. With no valid insurance in place, officers used powers under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act to seize the Lamborghini on the spot. This legislation allows police to remove vehicles immediately when a driver cannot demonstrate valid insurance.

On top of losing the car, the driver was issued a Section 59 warning, a measure used by police to address anti-social use of vehicles, and was reported to court over the incident.

West Yorkshire Police described the episode in a tongue-in-cheek social media statement, saying the driver "thought it would be a good idea to try launching like a NASA craft from the traffic lights on Shipley Airedale Road," before noting wryly that "clearly he hadn't spotted us."

The force went on to detail how the conversation about insurance unfolded, joking that they "entered into the merry-go-round discussions of insurance" after stopping him. Police said the driver had been "very confident" that his personal policy entitled him to drive the expensive car under third-party provisions, but added: "Sadly for him, his policy did not have such cover on it."

Summing up the outcome, the force confirmed the Lamborghini had been seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act "with a side serving of a Section 59 warning," and that the driver has been reported to court to face further action over the incident.

The case serves as a reminder to motorists to ensure their insurance policies genuinely cover the specific vehicles they intend to drive, particularly high-value cars, before getting behind the wheel.
