Kia (000270.KS) has pushed past several premium German automakers to claim second place in Britain's car market, one of Europe's biggest, trailing only Volkswagen in overall sales.
According to figures released on the 5th by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Kia sold 76,850 vehicles in the U.K. between January and August, a 2.3% increase from the same period last year. Volkswagen led the market with 111,830 units sold. Kia's result put it ahead of BMW, which sold 76,074 vehicles for third place, Audi with 71,904 units in fourth, and Ford with 71,050 in fifth. Notably, Kia was the lone Asian automaker to crack the top five.

The Korean brand's momentum in Britain is not new. Kia sold 100,191 vehicles there in 2022, then 107,765 in 2023, 112,252 in 2024, and 113,436 last year, building a four-year streak of annual sales above the 100,000-unit mark. Based on current trends, 2026 is on track to extend that run to five consecutive years.
Britain holds particular significance in the auto industry as the home of storied names like Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Jaguar Land Rover. The country's market remains a major force in Europe as well. Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) shows that 1,388,736 vehicles were sold in the U.K. from January through August this year, giving it a 15.1% share of the European market and placing it second behind Germany, where 1,965,024 units were sold for a 21.4% share.
Much of Kia's success in Britain can be traced to a single model: the Sportage. The compact SUV sold 30,564 units in the U.K. so far this year, making it the second-best-selling individual model in the country behind the Ford Puma, which moved 35,968 units. The Sportage alone accounts for roughly 40% of all Kia sales in Britain, underscoring just how central the vehicle has become to the brand's standing there. Its popularity has been reflected in industry recognition as well, with the Sportage earning the Family SUV title at the What Car? Awards — one of the U.K.'s most prominent automotive honors — for four years running.

Kia's rise in a market long dominated by European and premium brands signals growing consumer trust in the automaker's SUV lineup and suggests its British sales strength is likely to continue into the coming year.
