Lamborghini Eyes Return to WEC and ELMS With New Temerario GT3

Lamborghini Eyes Return to WEC and ELMS With New Temerario GT3

Lamborghini Squadra Corse boss Andrea Reggiani has confirmed the Italian manufacturer is working toward a comeback in the FIA WEC and European Le Mans Series in the coming years, using its new-for-2026 Temerario GT3 as the vehicle for that ambition.

Speaking to DSC at Petit Le Mans, Reggiani discussed Lamborghini's plans in ACO-backed racing after it was confirmed that two Temerario GT3s will race in the 2026/27 Asian Le Mans Series. He said interest from customer teams in that series actually outstripped the number of available entries, a sign of broader demand that could eventually extend to Europe.

"It is one of our objectives to have cars there (in the WEC) in the future, starting with Asian Le Mans Series and ELMS, then eventually the WEC," Reggiani said, adding that it's an ambition shared with several of the brand's customer squads.

A major obstacle, however, is grid capacity. The FIA WEC's full-season entry list currently stands at 35 cars, split between 17 in Hypercar and 18 in LMGT3. That number is expected to grow to 39 in 2027 once Ford and McLaren each add two Hypercar entries, though the future of Alpine's programme remains uncertain following its planned exit — a situation that could open two LMGT3 slots if Signatech fails to secure a new manufacturer to continue running rebadged A424s.

Should that scenario play out, Lamborghini could be positioned to fill the gap, provided it lines up a partner team whose entry is accepted. Even so, Reggiani downplayed the chances of a 2026 appearance, calling it "unlikely" but insisting the long-term goal remains firm. "We would like to go back. Maybe not next year in the WEC, but in the future," he said, adding that he hopes series organisers would also welcome Lamborghini's return.

On the prototype front, Reggiani made clear there are no immediate plans to revive the SC63 for Hypercar competition. Having joined Lamborghini earlier this year to lead the Temerario GT3 and Temerario Super Trofeo rollout, he said the brand's stance on its LMDh effort hasn't shifted, though strong interest in an Asian Le Mans Series Hypercar entry exists without any firm commitment yet.

Elsewhere, Lamborghini's IMSA future is still being finalized following Pfaff Motorsports' exit from GTD Pro. Reggiani called IMSA a "key market" but acknowledged rising costs make finding a well-funded partner more difficult without a factory-backed effort. He said Lamborghini expects to remain in IMSA for 2027, though it's unclear whether that will mean GTD, GTD Pro, or both, as discussions with potential partners continue.
