England goalkeeper Pickford admits careless driving after near-miss in Lamborghini

England and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention after a court heard he nearly caused a crash while behind the wheel of his £200,000 Lamborghini Urus.

The incident took place in Knutsford, Cheshire, on 14 April, when the 32-year-old ignored a give way sign, forcing two other vehicles to brake sharply to avoid colliding with him. He then drove off at speed before being stopped by police.

Court documents detail the account of PC Cecil Ricardo of Cheshire Police, who said he was stationary at traffic lights on Bexton Road when he spotted Pickford's blue Lamborghini Urus, fitted with personalised number plates, travelling along Princess Street.

According to the officer, the car reached the junction with Toft Road and "completely ignored the give way lines," pulling out and causing two vehicles to slam on their brakes to avoid a collision. The Lamborghini then sped away down Toft Road.

PC Ricardo said he switched on his lights and siren and gave chase, reaching speeds of 50mph on a road with a 30mph limit while Pickford's car "was still pulling away" from him. The goalkeeper eventually appeared to notice the pursuing police vehicle and pulled over.

Pickford entered his guilty plea in writing but has asked to appear in person at a future hearing to present mitigation. He told Warrington Magistrates' Court: "I would like to attend court to put forward my mitigation." His case was adjourned last week and is now due to return to Chester Magistrates' Court on 7 December.

Pickford, who has made 336 appearances for Everton, began his career at Sunderland and had loan spells at six clubs, including Burton Albion, Bradford City and Preston North End, before establishing himself as a Premier League regular. He has won 92 caps for England and has been the national team's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups. He also started in goal for England in the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals.

The case is the latest involving a high-profile footballer and driving offences. It follows news in September that England international Raheem Sterling admitted dangerous driving on a motorway prior to a crash, and an August case in which a semi-professional footballer was filmed driving at 191mph.
