Jaguar Land Rover Posts 6% Sales Growth in Q2 Despite China Slump

Jaguar Land Rover reported a 6% increase in global sales for the second quarter of its 2027 fiscal year, the period ending September 30, even as the British automaker continued to struggle in China.

According to an October 3 release from the company, JLR sold 161,400 vehicles worldwide across wholesale and retail channels during the quarter, up from 151,526 units in the same period last year.

The growth was uneven across regions. JLR's home market of the U.K., along with Europe and a broader category the company labels "Overseas," were the only regions to post sales increases. North America also saw a modest uptick and now makes up roughly a third of the automaker's total wholesale volume.

China remained a weak spot. JLR described sales there as "challenging," a situation made worse by the June conclusion of its CJLR joint venture with Chery Automobile, which had handled vehicle production in the country. The end of that partnership has left the automaker without a local manufacturing arm in one of the world's largest auto markets.

The Middle East also presented difficulties, with wholesale figures hurt by what JLR called "ongoing disruption" in the region. Still, the company noted that retail volumes there suggest "underlying demand is still strong," pointing to a gap between what's shipping to dealers and what's actually being purchased by consumers.

Across the business, JLR's premium SUV lineup continued to carry the bulk of sales. The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender models together accounted for 77.6% of total wholesale volume for the quarter, an increase from 76.7% a year earlier, underscoring how dependent the automaker has become on its higher-end Land Rover offerings.

Jaguar's side of the business told a different story. Sales of the brand's remaining gasoline-powered models fell sharply as the company prepares to pivot toward electrification with its Type 01 EV, which JLR is positioning as a key growth vehicle in the U.S. market.

The quarterly results follow a rocky stretch for JLR, which reported a 9.6% revenue decline in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 back in August. The company has also been navigating a broader restructuring of its brand strategy, having outlined separate powertrain paths for Jaguar and Land Rover earlier this year even as it worked through financial losses.
