Brace Yourself: Jaguar's Radical New Electric Car Is Being Revealed Tonight

Jaguar has confirmed when and where it will finally unveil its long-awaited Type 01 luxury electric GT, the car tasked with relaunching the storied British marque. The reveal will take place in New York this October, JLR chief commercial officer Leonard Hoornik told investors at the company's investor day on 17 June, promising the brand would "launch it... in a very, very special way" without elaborating further.

Choosing a US city for the unveiling, following the concept's debut in Miami last year, signals that JLR still regards America as a crucial market for the car, even amid the country's retreat from stricter emissions rules and criticism from some quarters over Jaguar's radical repositioning. JLR has also restated its commitment to keeping Jaguar an electric-only brand, despite recently confirming hybrid options for its EMA platform, which underpins future replacements for models like the Range Rover Evoque and Velar. CEO PB Balaji explained that the performance targets set for Jaguar "can be delivered only through an electric" drivetrain.

The car, a four-door sports saloon expected to produce more than 1000bhp, was previously referred to as Type 00 or by its internal codename X900, but will carry the Type 01 name into production. Jaguar says the name carries three meanings: "Type" links the car to past greats such as the C-Type, D-Type, E-Type and F-Type, each celebrated for combining an engaging drive with power, refinement and composure; the "0" nods to its zero-emissions powertrain; and the "1" marks it as the first model of Jaguar's new era.

Camouflaged prototypes, which Autocar has already driven in Sweden, were shown publicly on track ahead of the Formula E race in Monaco last month as part of the build-up to October's reveal.

The Type 01 is due to reach customers in the first half of 2027, ending an around 18-month gap in Jaguar production following the F-Pace's retirement last December. The brand is being entirely repositioned as a maker of exclusive, high-end electric vehicles, moving away from the mainstream pricing of its previous line-up.

Reports suggest the Type 01 will be priced from roughly £120,000 up to more than £150,000 for fully personalised versions, placing it above mainstream premium rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but below ultra-luxury names such as Bentley and Aston Martin. Jaguar has yet to confirm further models, though a large limousine and an SUV built on its new JEA architecture are expected to follow, potentially named Type 02 and Type 03.
