BYD's Electric Vehicle Sales Cross 300,000 in a Single Month for the First Time

BYD's Electric Vehicle Sales Cross 300,000 in a Single Month for the First Time

BYD closed out October with its best monthly sales performance of 2025, as battery electric vehicle deliveries broke past the 300,000 mark for the first time in the company's history, even as its plug-in hybrid business continued to cool.

The Chinese automaker reported selling 490,168 new energy vehicles for the month, a 10.97% jump from a year earlier and a 5.74% gain over September. It was BYD's sixth straight month of year-over-year growth and its eighth consecutive month of sequential gains, though the pace of annual growth eased from September's 16.98% rate. Even so, October stood as BYD's strongest sales month since December 2024 and its fourth-best on record.

The real story was battery electric vehicles. BYD moved 305,743 fully electric passenger cars during the month, up 37.38% from last October and 11.94% from September, marking the third straight monthly record for the segment. BEVs now make up 63.28% of BYD's passenger vehicle sales, up sharply from 50.95% a year ago, underscoring how quickly the company's lineup is tilting away from hybrids.

Plug-in hybrids, long a pillar of BYD's business, kept sliding. The company sold 177,382 plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles in October, down 17.23% year-over-year and 3.37% from the prior month, marking the second straight month of annual declines in that segment. For the first ten months of 2025, BEV sales reached 1,935,700 units, up 5.86%, while plug-in hybrid sales fell 11.02% to 1,625,969 units.

Total passenger NEV deliveries hit 483,125 for the month, up 10.59% annually, with commercial NEV sales adding another 7,043 units, a 45.22% increase from last year.

Exports remained a major growth driver. BYD shipped 170,194 new energy vehicles abroad in October, more than double last year's figure, though down 5.81% from September. Year-to-date exports through October reached 1,513,154 units, up 93.75%, reflecting the company's expanding footprint across Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

BYD also kept refreshing its lineup during the month. It launched the second-generation Seagull on October 20 with a larger body and flash-charging capability on some trims, followed a week later by the third-generation Qin Plus DM-i, which adds extended electric range and optional LiDAR. A second-generation Seal 07, offered in both EV and hybrid versions, is expected to debut November 5.

With BEV demand accelerating, exports nearly doubling and new models rolling out, BYD appears positioned for continued growth, though slowing annual sales gains and fierce competition in China remain challenges ahead.
