Porsche has confirmed that its new Cayenne will be offered with wireless charging technology, marking a significant step forward for the German manufacturer's electric vehicle lineup.

The system, known as Porsche Wireless Charging, does away with the need for a physical cable connection, instead allowing owners to power up their vehicle simply by parking it over a charging pad fitted to the ground.

Safety has been a key focus in the development of the technology. Porsche has built in a range of protective measures designed to prevent accidents or damage during the charging process. These include motion sensors and a foreign object detection system, which work together to monitor the area around the vehicle and the charging pad at all times.

According to Porsche, the charging process will automatically halt under specific circumstances. If a person or animal moves too close to either the car or the ground pad while charging is underway, the system will immediately cut power. Likewise, if a metallic object happens to be resting on the pad and begins heating up as a result, the charging will also be stopped straight away to avoid any risk of fire or injury.

The wireless charging system is now available to order in Germany, alongside a number of other European markets. Porsche has indicated that the technology will eventually reach customers around the world, though this global rollout will happen gradually, in stages, rather than all at once.

For UK buyers who are interested in equipping their new Cayenne with the wireless charging setup, Porsche has outlined two separate costs involved. Motorists will need to purchase a "Vehicle Pad including Preparation" package, which is priced at £1,322. This essentially prepares the car itself to be compatible with wireless charging.

In addition to this, customers will also require the physical charging infrastructure at home, referred to by Porsche as the "Ground pad (3-phase)". This component carries a price tag of £5,355.

Together, these two elements form the complete wireless charging package for the new Cayenne, giving UK owners the option to ditch traditional charging cables altogether in favour of a more convenient, hands-free way to top up their electric vehicle.

While full details on charging speeds and compatibility across the wider Porsche range have yet to be confirmed, the announcement signals the brand's continued push towards making electric vehicle ownership simpler and more seamless for everyday drivers.
