Audi Taps Thomas Fuhr to Head Its Formula 1 Engine Operation

Audi has named Thomas Fuhr as chief executive of Audi Formula Racing, its Formula 1 power-unit company, with the former Mercedes engine executive set to take up the role on November 1.

Fuhr will lead the organization from its Neuburg base, working alongside chief technical officer Stefan Dreyer, who will continue to focus on engine development, and chief operating officer Christian Foyer, who remains responsible for day-to-day operations.

The hire brings back a chief executive position that had been scrapped during Audi's reorganization earlier in 2025, when Adam Baker departed and oversight of both the chassis and engine programs was consolidated under Mattia Binotto.

Fuhr arrives with a background well suited to the role. He served as managing director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from 2009 to 2012, before moving into senior positions at GROHE and LIXIL. Most recently, he held the post of chief technology officer at Georg Fischer Building Flow Solutions.

Binotto, who serves as Audi's team chief executive and team principal, said Fuhr's appointment would support the organization's growth as it works toward its stated goal of becoming "the best F1 manufacturer."

The move effectively divides responsibility for the engine company into two distinct functions: running the organization and improving the technical product itself. Dreyer keeps ownership of the power unit's development, while Fuhr takes charge of the structure meant to support that effort.

For Audi, the real test will come on track. Restructuring the management of its engine operation only matters if it translates into tangible gains in performance, and the manufacturer's progress will ultimately be judged by results rather than organizational charts.
