There is a surprise addition to my collection, I've bought a 'new' PORSCHE! New to me at least, but very much in need of some MAJOR work, and that's where the fun begins. First up, the challenge to collect the abandoned car and bring it home, then to figure out what's happening next. Let's go!
Prior to today, the oldest car in my collection is around 20 years, but it's time to wind back the clock a whole lot further with a 1970s Porsche. Having not owned a model from the Zuffenhausen brand in recent years since selling my 718 Cayman GT4, it's been an obvious omission for quite some time. However, my choice of car to fill that spot might be a bit of a twist... especially with the plans ahead!
We kick off at the barn with an important task for what's coming up next; swapping my second set of GT Black Series wheels over to some winter tyres - because the snow is beckoning. After that, we're borrowing my Dad's Jaguar F-Pace D300 given my lack of car with an ability to tow at the moment, to go to our friends at GT Towing to pick up a flat bed for the non-runner I have bought.
-- SPOILER BELOW --
It may be new to me; but this car is certainly not new, in fact it is a 1973 Porsche 914/4 Roadster! This particular car started life in Canada, before being imported to the UK around 5 years ago, although the work to get it back on the road since then has basically been abandoned leaving it completely out of shape.
The 914 was a project between VW and Porsche, which actually raced at Le Mans in 1970 and won the class alongside Porsche's absolute outright victory for the first time, while also being the first ever F1 Safety Car at the Canadian GP in 1973. My particular car is a slightly later 2.0 with the 5spd manual, coming in the second half of the life cycle, as opposed to the base 1.7/1.8. The flagship is the rarer 914/6 with a Porsche 6-cylinder, but before we even consider the engine in mine, this is a car that needs a lot; it's out of shape, has rust, the engine is unknown, the interior is all over the place, and there are parts everywhere to figure out!
Obviously it's far beyond what I could dive into first go myself, but that's where @yorkshirecarrestoration are going to step in as we will be taking it up for Steve and Ryan to show exactly what's wrong and what we need to do next. Stay tuned for the inspection and prepare to be shocked!
For today, we're bringing the car back to @TheShmuseum to reveal all and get a first look at what's going to be coming up with this project... wish me luck!
Thanks for watching, Tim
