I head down to DK Engineering to check out two incredibly rare versions of the iconic V12 Ferrari 599. (
First up is the 599 GTB 60 F1, commonly incorrectly referred to as the 'Alonso Edition'. Designed to celebrate 60 years of Ferrari F1 victories, the 60F1 edition was launched in 2011. The 60F1 was based on the 599 with the HGTE handling package fitted from factory.
The 60F1 was launched in 3 liveries, the first paying homage to Froilan Gonzalez’ victory in the 375F1 1951 and two inspired by Fernando Alonso’s 2011 150* Italia F1 car and his win - also at Silverstone - in 2011. Each of the liveries included Scuderia hand painted wing shields, a satin aluminium fuel cap and 20 inch diamond-finish forged alloy wheels.
Inside the car receives a unique interior, with the seats featuring a unique pattern in Nero Alcantara with Superfabric high-grip inserts. The car features harnesses in red and blue and the dashboard is topped with white-silver Alutex. The Scuderia shield is embroidered on the headrests and the car features a white rev counter.
The second car is a stunning 599 GTO, one of the first cars to ever go through Ferrari's Tailor Made program which allows customers to choose completely bespoke options for their cars.
Preceded and prompted by huge demand for the ‘One-to-One’ program on the 612, Ferrari had developed the concept for bespoke specifications and, at the time of the launch of the GTO, Ferrari opened their first 'Tailor Made' centre in Maranello. Early Tailor Made examples were not badged as such but were still open to a wealth of extended personalisation options out of reach of the majority.
The 599 GTO had been made available exclusively to VIP customers, and allocation of the 599-unit production run was oversubscribed and sold out immediately. From this list of customers, however, there was of course, still an order of importance. As such, only a handful of cars received ‘Tailor Made’ customisation.
This is one such example to benefit from the program. Supplied new to its first owner by Cornes Ferrari Japan, this 599 GTO is uniquely specified in the supremely elegant and sporting Extra- Campionario Blu Ghibli Cup, a colour that pays tribute to the Blu Francia livery of the limited-run Maserati Ghibli Cup built during the 1990s. An original owner of once such example, the Ghibli Cup had been created at the hands of Luca di Montezomolo in 1995, from the ageing BiTurbo and developed a staggering 330bhp from its 2.0 V6 engine, the most powerful 2.0 litre of its time.
